No pickleball March 7

Meerscheidt will be closed this week and next due to Spring Break. High winds are forecast for Thursday March 7, so outdoor play is not feasible. We are cancelling pickelball practice this week. We will play outside next week – Thursday March 14, if the weather allows, probably at Sunny Acres RV Park. Check back for updates!

1. Jo Bidwell is our March speaker. She drives over from Lubbock to meet with our group. Jo is a walking encyclopedia of Parkinson’s information. Because she is so knowledgeable, she could speak for hours but she has only 1.5 hours. Please email or call Sarah (575-496-2550 sarah.stegall.pdsgsnm@gmail.com) with specific topics in which you have an interest. She can discuss movement issues, cognitive issues, “off” times, telling your family, etc. Please give me some topics!

2. The Parkinson’s Westside Support Team holds their meetings on the first Wednesday of each month, at 3:00 in El Paso at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church. On March 6th at 3:00 pm, Tiffany, representative of the Kyowa Kirin pharmaceutical group, will be accompanying Dr. Pavasia, a Movement Disorder Neurologist from Plano, Texas.  I’m sure Dr. Pavasia’s presentation will be interesting and informative. If you would like to talk with a movement disorder specialist, this is your chance.

Driving instructions from Las Cruces to both the March 6 and March 9 events at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church:

  • Heading east on I-10, drive about 30 miles (depending on where you live in Las Cruces)
  • until the 
  • Take exit 2, Vinton Road, follow the curvy road to the stop light. Turn right onto Vinton road. Drive 1 mile. 
  • Turn left on Hwy. 20 (or Doniphan Dr.) drive 8 miles,
  • Turn left on Redd Road drive 2.5 miles
  • Turn right on Westwind Drive drive .8 miles
  • Turn left on Belvidere Street 1.2 miles to church on the left

3. LEARN. LIVE. CONNECT. Presented by Parkinson’s Movement and Disorder Alliance partnered with Parkinson’s Westside Support Team on March 9 in El Paso. I have two vehicles driven by our members with space for passengers needing a ride to El Paso for this event. Contact me if you want a ride!

Pickleball January 11

Diane reports our new weekly pickleball court times at Meerscheidt Recreation Center have changed.  Our class time will run from 12:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Thursday until March.

The Organ Mountain Pickleball Club has generously offered to pay our gym fees for 2024! Thank you!.  See you Thursday!

Holiday Closures

The December 26 Newly Diagnosed Support Group meeting is cancelled. Next meeting will be January 23.

Exercise Class Cancellations:

  • Carol’s Exercise class at Genesis, The Village at Northrise – the Hallmark Building-Monday and Wednesday, 10 – 11 am (NO CLASSES DECEMBER 22 -JANUARY 2)
  • Rock Steady Boxing – Monday and Friday Class Time Wednesday Open Gym all at 11 am. New location: Maximum Martial Arts, 1705 E. University Ave., Las Cruces (NO CLASS ON DECEMBER 25.)
  • Pickleball at Meerscheidt Recreation Center almost every Thursday at 12:45. (NO CLASSES DECEMBER 14 – DECEMBER 31 AND INTO JANUARY. WE DON’T HAVE A RETURN TO CLASS DATE.) We may be meeting at Sunny Acres December 21.
